1) Fernando Torres (Chelsea, £50m)
The most expensive signing made by a British club, Fernando Torres made the sensational £50m move from Liverpool to rivals Chelsea in January 2011. Whilst his sale then prompted Liverpool to massively over-spend on bringing in Andy Carroll, Torres has arguably been worse value for money after some badly uninspiring displays for the Blues. Once regarded as one of the best strikers in the world, the Spaniard is now something of a laughing stock in European football and a truly bad investment by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich. The 11th most expensive player of all time, but probably the biggest waste of money in that top 11.
