6) Juan Sebastian Veron (Manchester United, £28m)
After some world class displays at Lazio convinced Sir Alex Ferguson to break the bank to bring Juan Sebastian Veron to Manchester United in 2001, the Argentine midfielder will definitely go down as one of the legendary manager’s biggest transfer mistakes. A short and equally disappointing spell at Chelsea followed for Veron after two years at United, and he never truly found his best form again. Although it may not seem much these days, the £28m United paid for him at the time was a huge amount, and it will have to go down as one that really didn’t pay off.
