The Tennessee Titans reportedly believe that QB Zach Mettenberger was the biggest steal of the 2014 NFL draft and that he could be a “poor team’s Tom Brady.”
According to David Climer of the Tennessean, Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt felt that when the team drafted Mettenberger in the 6th round with the 178th pick of the 2014 NFL draft, they were getting one of the biggest steals in a draft since the Patriots drafted Tom Brady in the 6th round of the 2000 NFL draft.
Mid-way through the Titans’ terrible 2-14 2014 season, Mettenberger was named the team’s starter and started six games for the Titans, losing all six of them but putting up some impressive numbers in spite of that. 8 TDs, 6 INTs, 1,395 passing yards (232 yards/game), a 60.34% completion rate and an 86.7 passer rating. Mettenberger would finish the season on injured reserve after suffering an injury against the New York Giants in Week 14.
Assuming the Titans are overflowing with confidence in Mettenberger, logic would dictate that the team wouldn’t invest the 2nd overall pick they hold in the 2015 NFL draft in one of the top two QB prospects – Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota. Last week NFL.com reported that the Titans were interested in trading down from the pick.
