Martin Keown
Club: Arsenal 1993-2004.
Alongside Adams, Keown made up one-half of a formidable central defensive partnership for both club and country.
Also like Adams the centre-back brought grit and physicality to a truly dominant Arsenal side that knocked Manchester United off their perch on several occasions.
Gary Neville
Club: 1992-2011.
A product of the United youth academy and a true Red Devil through and through, Neville was also a stalwart at right-back for nearly two decades for both club and country.
Never a showy player the full-back was solid and reliable and alongside best friend David Beckham provided a formidable defensive and offensive unit on the right flank.
Gary Pallister
Clubs: Manchester United 1989-1998, Middlesbrough 1998-2001.
Was part of the great United team that dominated English football throughout the 1990s, partnering Steve Bruce at the back and winning four league titles.
Pallister moved to boyhood club Boro in 1998 when the Red Devils signed Jaap Stam, but despite the Dutchman’s talent he never quite replaced the England international’s dominance.
John Terry
Club: Chelsea 2000 to present.
The former England captain is praised for the bravery and commitment Terry brings to the team and was a key member of Chelsea’s three Premier League winning teams.
Although the centre-back has received some criticism over the past few years with Jose Mourinho back at Stamford Bridge Terry will be hoping he can recapture the magic.
Nemanja Vidic
Club: Manchester United 2006 to present.
One of only two foreigners on the list, Vidic made an immediate impact at United when signing for a modest £9m sum in 2006.
Alongside Ferdinand the current Red Devils captain has helped form arguably the greatest central partnership in Premier League history.
