7. Real Madrid – £93m.
Big buys in the last few weeks has taken Madrid ahead of fierce rivals Barca on this list, with young Spanish talent such as Isco and Asier Illarramendi coming in for a combined total of over £50m.
A large £26m fee paid to Tottenham 12 months ago for Luka Modric also helps to take Los Blancos’ overall expenditure just ahead of Zenit.
6. Anzhi Makhachkala – £105m.
Under the guidance of established manager Guus Hiddink Russian rich boys Anzhi have continued to spend big in the transfer market.
The most expensive acquisition in the last 12 months has been talented Brazilian winger Willian, who cost the club £30m from Shakhtar Donetsk.
5. Manchester City – £107m.
Keeping up the theme of rich owners and buying success, City are the next on the list with a colossal sum paid out for Fernandinho this summer, whilst the likes of Jesus Navas, Javi Garcia and Jack Rodwell have also bumped up the total.
With new manager Manuel Pellegrini now officially in charge that spending will only continue to rise until the end of August.
4. Bayern Munich – £112m.
The 2013 treble-winning side has been amassed with some serious money, but then as Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League holders it seems somewhat justified.
Mario Goetze and Javi Martinez cost nearly £70m between them, although the £11m spent on Wolfsburg striker Mario Mandzukic a year ago is beginning to look like an utter bargain considering the season the Croatian has just had.
