1. Andy Carroll – Liverpool, £35m.
Carroll was always being set-up for a fall as soon as then Reds manager Kenny Dalglish sanctioned a £35m move for a player who had just 18 matches experience in the top flight.
Only Cristiano Ronaldo can live up to over-the-top transfer fees and with so much pressure the Englishman managed just 11 goals in two seasons at Anfield, before being loaned to West Ham.
The Hammers have now signed Carroll permanently with Liverpool having to cringe at a £20m loss in two-and-a-half years.
