6. Winston Bogarde – Chelsea, free transfer.
Although a free transfer Bogarde perhaps represents the worst ever value for money, for cost of wages compared to playing time.
Having been signed by Gianluca Vialli in 2000 (who was sacked five games into the season) the defender was then unwanted by new manager Claudio Ranieri.
But Bogarde had signed a four-year contract at £40,000-a-week and was determined to fufill it – which he duly did and when it ended in 2004 the Dutchman retired from the game having played a grand total of nine matches for Chelsea.
