5. Francis Jeffers – Arsenal, £8m.
Jeffers is perhaps one of the most prime examples of a failed prediction when Arsenal paid big money to Everton for the young Englishman.
It became apparent quite quickly that Arsene Wenger had got this one spectacularly wrong and three seasons with the Gunners – one back on-loan at the Toffees – yielded just four goals.
Jeffers has since played for Charlton, Rangers and Blackburn to name a few and at the age of 32 (we thought he was older too) the forward is at Accrington Stanley. In fact 264 career matches in Britain has seen Jeffers score just 49 goals.
The striker actually earned a cap for England… and scored!
