The Red Devils secured a narrow win to boost confidence.
Manchester United will certainly be the happier from Wednesday night’s League Cup clash as their second-string side beat a string Liverpool team 1-0 at Old Trafford.
Even the returning Luis Suarez couldn’t help the Reds, so here are the best performances from United’s win.
The best…
Jonny Evans
The Red Devils are lucky to have a squad player like Evans as with displays like this, the Northern Irishman could probably walk into almost any starting XI in the Premier League.
After a woeful performance from United’s defence against Manchester City at the weekend, the 25-year-old could realistically be vying for a place ahead of Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic.
Javier Hernandez
The Mexican made the most of a rare start for the English champions and is another who seems wasted as a super-sub.
A well taken finish past Simon Mignolet was the only goal of the game and with Robin Van Persie currently sidelined, Hernandez could also get another chance at the weekend.
Wayne Rooney
It’s just getting better and better for United’s stand-in captain, as the England international dominated the game from the forward’s role behind Hernandez.
Handing in a transfer request seems to have done the 27-year-old the world of good and manager David Moyes is relying on this form to continue.
The worst…
David De Gea
A less than assured display from the Spaniard, who seems to have reverted back to the sloppiness that cost the goalkeeper the No.1 spot back in 2011/12.
Againts City De Gea looked exposed at times and from long shots in this tie the 22-year-old again looked less than certain.
Shinji Kagawa
Every United fan seems to have been crying out for Kagawa to get a game but based on this performance the next one won’t be quick to arrive.
Of course game time is what a player needs to gain confidence and form and exiling the Japan international won’t help, but this was far from a great night for the 24-year-old.
Nani
With Ashley Young having a nightmare at the Etihad on Sunday, Moyes may be worrying about the Scot’s available wingers at the moment.
Nani did little to show that the Portugal international is the man to replace Young and Wilfried Zaha must be itching to show the boss that the 20-year-old deserves a chance next.
