4. John Charles – Juventus

Became the first truly prominent Brit playing abroad when the Welshman made a then British record transfer to Turin – and spent five years with Juve.

During that time Charles would win three league titles and two Italian Cups, as well as being top-scorer in his first season and coming third in the Ballon d’Or in 1959.
