Just when everything seemed sorted the Blues throw a spanner in the works.
So things were settled; Gareth Bale would go to Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur would replace the Welshman with Willian – until Chelsea entered the race for the Brazilian at the 11th hour.
Although it didn’t seem like the Blues needed any more attacking midfielders at the club – with six internationals already available in that position – owner Roman Abramovich has started early with interference into transfer dealings, reports the Mirror.
Willian currently plays for Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala and the side are owned by billionaire oligarch Suleyman Kerimov – an associate of Abramovich’s.
The owner from west London personally contacted Kerimov to pledge a £32m offer for the South American, which is £2m more than Spurs had tabled.
This new development is said to have angered Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy so much that the club are now considering calling off Bale’s world record £94m move to Madrid, according to the Daily Mail.
Willian was considered to be a readymade replacement for the 24-year-old due to the fact the Brazil international operates in a similar position, but this shock intervention from Chelsea has completely ruined the plans.
Bale still wants a move away from White Hart Lane, but the north London club want to find someone new before they let their talisman go – with Erik Lamela of AS Roma also being targeted.
Yet new director of football Franco Baldini has already flown to the Spanish capital to tie up the world record fee that Los Blancos are prepared to pay for the Wales international, reports the Independent.
It still looks likely that Bale will depart the Premier League, but where Willian will end up remains to be seen.
