3. South America’s ‘dark horses’
It seems the label of ‘dark horse’ usually gets attached to mid-level European sides that had a good qualifying campaign. However, this summer, where the likes of Croatia and Bosnia failed, and Belgium and Greece failed to impress, it’s the South American’s that have taken centre stage.
Chile and Colombia have been two of the most exciting facets of the whole show, and only suffered when they came up against the hosts, while Ecuador also gave a good account of themselves in Group E. The tournament has made stars of Alexis Sanchez and James Rodriguez, who were stars before it kicked off but have had huge career boosts as a result. Similarly the North Americans have been in fine form, too, as Mexico and the USA have proved a lot of their pre-tournament doubters massively wrong.
