2. The fall of Spain’s golden generation
The Spaniards were once again heavily tipped to take the crown the year, but surprisingly imploded during their first game and booked their ticket home from there. After going a goal up against the Dutch, they then had to sit back and watch experienced stars struggle as Louis Van Gaal’s hit five stunning goals past them.
Iker Casillas, Andres Iniesta, David Villa and Xavi all looked out of sorts and were unable to help the side’s younger stars, and in doing so looked to have called time on their status as the best of the best. However, it may not be as surprising as it would suggest as none have had particularly great seasons for their club sides (apart from David Villa) and now they will be left to pick up the pieces to try and mount a serious challenge for Euro 2016.
