With social and political tensions in the host country reaching boiling point, Brazil’s games have seemingly had some held from the match officials. Knowing that anything other than lifting the prize would end in disaster, the referees have been reluctant to punish the Selecao for some fairly glaring mistakes.
They have also been given their fair share of the decisions, too. Starting in the first game with a soft penalty against Croatia and continuing right up to their quarter-final clash with Colombia, the Brazil squad have been able to count themselves lucky that they’re still there.
