Another player United brought in last summer was the goal hungry striker Radamel Falcao. And though he may not have cost much in terms of a transfer fee, he is reportedly on a stunning £265,000-per-week and for that he has contributed a meagre four goals.
It’s understandable why United pounced to bring him to the club – he is one of the most feared strikers in Europe after all – but following a debilitating ACL injury that ruled him out of the World Cup, they perhaps should have known that he would not be the same player as before, at least not yet anyway.
With Robin Van Persie off colour, and Wayne Rooney shuffled back into the midfield, below are three strikers United should have picked up instead of making a move for Falcao.
Alexandre Lacazette – Lyon
The top scorer in Ligue 1 this season, United could have landed him for a snip last summer, but will now face some serious competition for his signature should they opt to make a move for him this time around. Confident and dangerous, Lacazette is a future star, and would still cost marginally less that the Colombian.
Edinson Cavani – PSG
There’s no shame in playing second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic – he’s a great player – but United so obviously had the money to bring him on board last summer, and the most certainly should have payed it. Cavani has still managed to bag 28 goals across all competitions this season, but United will struggle to convince him this year with so many other big suitors around the table.
Danny Welbeck
That’s right. United should never have let him go. He’s scored eight goals for Arsenal so far, but he is also able to take up a role on the wing, meaning he could have forced Juan Mata into a preferred position through the middle, thus freeing Wayne Rooney to stay up front. Oh the possibilities.
