Once hailed as a future legend for both Manchester City and England, the young midfielder seemingly had the world at his feet.
But injuries quickly took their toll on his fledgling career, and this was followed by a series of mental health problems, which forced him to quit the game after a short attempt at a comeback with Leicester in 2012. He soon announced his retirement and is now running his own estate agency in his hometown of Manchester.
