6. Roy Keane
Clubs: Nottingham Forest, Manchester United.
A midfield enforcer and a player from the old school style of football, although with a deft touch and incredible passing range that is often forgotten.
Keane was the kingpin during United’s dominance of the 1990s and early 2000s as a captain who played at full throttle – occasionally crossing the line, such as the career ending tackle on Alf-Inge Halaan of Manchester City in 2001.
As a skipper there was perhaps no one better that the Irishman however and seven league titles, four FA Cups and a Champions League stud his career – with Keane’s one-man dominance of Juventus in the semi-final of the 1999 European tournament a particular highlight.
Left Old Trafford suddenly in 2005 following disagreements with Ferguson, a decision the midfielder later admitted he regrets and has gone onto be a manager and football pundit.
