Massimo Moratti spent a world record £19m to take the Brazilian to San Siro from Barcelona in 1997, and he duly delivered in his first season as he clinched a second consecutive FIFA World Footballer of the Year award.
However, having established himself as one of the best in the world, a heartbreaking series of serious knee injuries ensured he was unable to replicate that form until his move to Real Madrid in 2002.
He returned to Italy with the Rossoneri in 2007, and became the first player to have scored for both clubs in the Derby della Madonnina. Despite 7 goals in 14 league games, another knee injury cut short his stay with Milan.
