The players who have gone in tough and come out the more successful.
The Premier League is famed for its physicality and toughness so here fanatix takes a look at the top five tacklers from the seasons so far.
5. Marc Wilson – Stoke City
12 tackles, 86% success rate
Wilson is part of the reason why Stoke, under new manager Mark Hughes, have conceded just two goals in the league and currently have back-to-back wins.
Many predicted the Potters would struggle this year, but Hughes appears to be proving the critics wrong with strong victories over Crystal Palace and West Ham United.
4. Aaron Ramsey – Arsenal
12 tackles, 92% success rate
The Welshman has really grown into a top-class talent this term and has impressed for the Gunners on both the domestic and European stage so far.
With key stars such as Mikel Arteta, Abou Diaby and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all out with long term injuries, there has been a lot of reliance on Ramsey.
3. Glen Johnson – Liverpool
12 tackles, 100% success rate
Until Johnson’s injury in the Reds’ last league clash with rivals Manchester United, the right-back was an enforcer and helped the club to successive clean-sheets.
The Merseyside outfit are still yet to concede a goal in the English top tier and Johnson’s 100% tackle rate is largely to do with that.
2. Lucas Leiva – Liverpool
13 tackles, 72% success rate
With the best defence in the league thus far it was always likely that Liverpool stars would dominate this list and Lucas joins Johnson in the top five.
The Brazilian has emerged as a reliable and creative defensive midfielder for Brendan Rodgers’ men and alongside captain Steven Gerrard, forms a strong core in the middle of the park.
1. Joel Ward – Crystal Palace
16 tackles, 100% success rate
Yet despite the fact that the list is mainly dominated with stars from the big teams, the man who is streaks ahead of the rest is Palace right-back Ward.
Admittedly the Eagles perhaps have a little more defending to do than most in the division, but the 23-year-old is making a good job of keeping the opposition at bay so far.
