New United boss Louis van Gaal spent over £150m on new signings this summer, bringing in the likes of Angel di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw in big money deals, but now they want more.
We understand that the Old Trafford club have placed Gareth Bale, Sami Khedira and Dani Alves on their lengthy list of transfer targets, and are willing to splash another £100m to sign all three players in January.
Reports in the Daily Star earlier this week claimed that United are preparing to launch an ambitious move for Madrid’s former Tottenham star Bale, and are willing to pay a world record £90m fee to sign the 25-year-old.
Van Gaal is desperate for a marquee signing, but fears that his chances of re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo are rapidly fading. Sources in Spain claim Bale has not settled into the Madrid side – featuring new Galacticos Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez – this season, with the Welsh ace apparently neglecting his defensive duties and frustrating coach Carlo Ancelotti.
United could make Sami Khedira their second signing from Madrid. The World Cup winning midfielder is desperate to leave the European Champions, and is available on the cheap with his contract expiring at the end of the season.
Arsenal are thought to be the favourites, but the Daily Express has claimed that a £10m bid could convince Madrid to allow the player to move to Old Trafford instead. United are in need of an outright holding player, with Michael Carrick struggling for fitness, and Darren Fletcher yet to impress Van Gaal.
The Red Devils will complete their spree by signing Barcelona full-back Dani Alves, who they view as the ideal replacement for the substandard Rafael, who has endured an extremely difficult start to the season.
Alves suits Van Gaal’s preferred 3-5-2 system, which relies on attacking full-backs, but is also capable of playing in a 4-4-2, as he has done for the Catalans for many years.
The player has previously been quoted by O Globo, stating: “Next year I move to England to play in the cradle of football. This will be my last season at Barca,” and it is thought that United could tempt the Brazilian to move ahead of schedule with a £7m offer in the New Year.
United currently sit tenth in the Premier League table, with eight points from six games ahead of Sunday’s match with Everton.
