United are lacking some important stars to make them title contenders.
It’s been a less than spectacular start for Manchester United since David Moyes succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson as manager and the January transfer window could be very important.
Here are three players that fanatix thinks Moyes should sign to improve their chances.
Leighton Baines
Moyes tried and failed to sign the Scot’s former player from Everton in the summer, but should seriously consider taking up the matter once again in the New Year.
Although Patrice Evra is a strong full-back, Baines brings a level of creativity from the position to rival any of the best defenders in world football.
Another great season with the Toffees so far means that the Englishman won’t be cheap and the left-back will also be 29 by January – but three decent years will justify the price.
Cheaper alternative: Stick with what they’ve got.
Ezequiel Garay
Another that was on United’s radar and then passed them by, but as in the case of Baines the English champions should step up their efforts in the next window.
With Rio Ferdinand out of sorts and Chris Smalling looking short of the quality required to be at Old Trafford, the Argentinian could be the perfect acquisition.
Garay was something of a late bloomer after failing to make an impression at Real Madrid in the 26-year-old’s younger days, but is now a firm favourite for both Benfica and Argentina.
Cheaper alternative: Inigo Martinez, Real Sociedad.
Ilkay Gundogan
If there is one thing the Red Devils are severely lacking then it is creativity and as much as Baines can do from left-back, the England international is still a defender.
Gundogan is a young box-to-box midfielder with supreme talent, although an injury that could rule out the 22-year-old until after Christmas may be a worry.
Likewise, if the German were to look to previous movers from the Westfalenstadion to United it may not convince the star, with Shinji Kagawa hardly enjoying life in Manchester currently.
Cheaper alternative: Ganso, Sao Paulo.
