That is now three of the last eight tournaments Woods has had to call time on early and it’s the fifth time it has happened since 2011 – leading to speculation the 14-time Major winner may have to retire.
The 39-year-old was clearly struggling on the course all day as he limped to 10 holes, amazingly managing to stay at par despite the fact he was in so much pain his playing partner Billy Horschel was having to pick his tees up from the ground.
Then a double-bogey on the 11th signaled enough was enough for Woods and on the 12th he decided to end the round, driving straight from Torrey Pines to go and receive treatment after giving a brief interview to the waiting journalists.
“It’s just my glutes are shutting off,” he was quoted by the Guardian.
“They don’t activate, hence it goes into my lower back. It is frustrating that I just can’t stay activated. It just got progressively tighter.”
With the first major of the season, The Masters, just nine weeks away there is a concern Woods may not be able to feature for the second year running and his current position of 56th on the PGA Tour is sure to drop as well after this latest setback.
