Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Zach Mettenberger was sucker-punched at a local bar, which reportedly stemmed from an Alabama fan trying to rile him up.
Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Zach Mettenberger endured a rough weekend as he encountered an unexpected nuisance at a local bar.
The owner of the bar that Mettenberger attended said that he was sucker-punched. The punch allegedly stemmed from an Alabama fan saying “Roll Tide” to Mettenberger, who then turned around and said “good luck with that.”
Mettenberger played college football at LSU, who is a bitter rival of Alabama’s, and the Alabama fan was seemingly trying to push the former LSU star’s buttons.
Steve Ford, the bar owner, insisted that Mettenberger did not throw a punch though. “The guy said ‘Roll Tide.’ He tried to provoke him. But Zach did not throw one punch, period. I was standing right next to him,” Ford said to the Tennessean.
The sixth-round pick displayed great accuracy in his senior season at LSU, completing about 65 percent of his passes while throwing 22 touchdowns against eight interceptions.
He may emerge as a sleeper to start for the Titans right away, but Jake Locker is expected to keep the job. However, Mettenberger will have a chance to prove he is the future if Locker continues to struggle and get injured.
