Did the NRL do enough to help Todd Carney and what now for the sacked star?
Carney was sacked by the Cronulla Sharks less than 24 hours after a photo depicting Carney drinking his own urine in a bathroom at Northies Hotel went viral on social media.
Acting quickly in the wake of stunned fans outrage, Cronulla terminated the remaining three years of Carney’s $650,000-a-year deal, and putting his football future in Australia under severe strain.
Sharks captain Paul Gallen was just one of a number of people to check in on Carney on Monday at his apartment.
“Yeah I’ve spoken to him, it’s a tough time for everyone,” he said before he drove off.
Wade Graham also met with Carney, who himself has not been seen or heard of since the storm over the photo erupted late on Saturday night.
Eric Grothe Jr left Carey’s building at 8.30am but refused to speak to waiting media about what he said to the troubled playmaker.
“I haven’t spoken to him, I haven’t seen him, I can’t comment or I’ll get in trouble,” he said.
“I would love to have a chat but I’m going to find out now what’s happening.”
The show of support from some of Carney’s former teammates comes in the wake of a re-scheduled weights sessions with the club saying the players were not in the right head-space to train.
Opinion between the Sharks playing group is said to be divided over the saga, with some frustrated that one of their best players has again put himself in a position to be punished.
While other are not happy with club bosses for sacking Carney so quickly and without a formal chance to explain his actions.
The drama just adds to what has been a miserable season so far from the Sharks, who have recorded just three wins from 11 games which has them rooted to the bottom of the NRL ladder.
Their task does not get any easier, or the spotlight any less harsh, as they try and prepare this week to take on the Sydney Roosters in round 17 .
