3. England 2-3 West Germany (1970)
Defending champions England led Germany 2-0 and were coasting into the semi-finals of the World Cup. But, in the absence of ill goalkeeper Gordon Banks, the Germans pulled it back to 2-2 in the second half, before Geoff Hurst had a goal mysteriously ruled out. Legendary striker Gerd Muller won in in extra time to send the holders out.
