3. Glenn McGrath – Australia
Glenn McGrath is likely to reign as the most successful fast bowler in Test cricket history for some time, with his 563 wickets easily the best by a quick bowler.
But it was not just the amount of wickets he took or how quickly they came, but the manner in which the Australian got them.
Forming a potent combination with Shane Warne, McGrath was a picture of consistency rather than sheer pace as others on the list have been described.
Bowling at no-more than 135km/h on a regular basis, McGrath would aim for the top of off-stump or just one stump wide of that and then wait for the results.
Using just enough seam movement and varying bounce, McGrath was able to get wickets with the new ball and the old, and never let the pressure off batsmen he had targeted before series had often begun.
Check out McGrath taking 8-24 against Pakistan in 2004.
