7. Dwight Howard – 2008
Superman is in the building.
From one end of the height scale to the other, we visit the number seven spot on our countdown with Dwight Howard’s spectacular efforts in 2008.
In past years the dunk contest had been ruled by small forwards or explosive guards, men that look like they are feet off the ground as the glide to the rim.
Never before had the competition seen a 6ft 11in centre do the same thing, but Howard re-wrote the history books with what was possible from big men in the glamour event.
Every dunk Howard threw down defied belief, but his famous ‘Superman’ dunk was perhaps the most insane seen in dunk contest history.
After getting a running start, the then Orlando star took off from close to the free-throw line, caught a pass mid-air and was high enough to throw the ball in from a few feet away.
While some might agree Howard didn’t “dunk” the ball, the physicality needed to be that high to pull off the move makes it one of the more amazing dunks in the contest’s history.
