2. Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona)
Appearances: 23 (2)
Total league goals: 25
Minutes on pitch: 1960
Goals per 90 minutes: 1.15
By all accounts, this is Lionel Messi’s worst season in the last five years. For the first time since 2009, he surrendered the Ballon d’Or to arch rival Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid.
In a campaign disrupted by injury for their Argentine talisman, FC Barcelona have not been up to their usual standards in La Liga, and exited the UEFA Champions League at the quarter final stage – their worst performance in the competition since 2007.
When fit however, Messi remains arguably the most consistently dangerous attacking player in the world though, and his tally of 25 goals in 25 matches in the Spanish top flight is a frightening one.
