7. Referee mistake leaves question marks to Tim Bradley vs. Jesse Vargas superfight
Heading into the final 30 seconds of the 12th round of the Bradley/Vargas superfight for the WBO interim Welterweight title, it seemed that Tim Bradley was going to easily win the match by a majority decision after dominating Vargas for most of the fight. Then, with less than :23 left on the clock, Vargas came out of nowhere and caught Bradley right in the cheek, staggering the would-be-champion to the point where he could barely defend himself. With :07 left on the clock the referee stopped the match and Vargas immediately jumped for joy thinking he had won by TKO.
But the referee revealed that he thought he had heard the stopping bell at the :07 mark and called for the end of the match by accident, sending the match to a judge’s decision which Bradley won unanimously.
It’s hard to say what would have happened had the referee not made the critical mistake – would Vargas have scored the knockout or would Bradley have been able to dodge and recollect himself until the timer officially stopped. We may never know – which is why a rematch of what was an otherwise incredible fight seems imminent.
6. Sepp Blatter announces resignation, OR DOES HE?
Like the Berlin Wall coming down, the announcement that FIFA demagogue Sepp Blatter would be stepping down from power was seen as an almost liberating moment in the sports world.
But the celebration hasn’t lasted long for a number of reasons: A – He will still retain control of the FIFA Presidency until his successor is announced, and B – He has opened up the strong possibility of staying on.
What will happen in the Sepp Blatter saga? We’ll have to wait and see…
