5. England wins FIRST EVER Womens’ World Cup Quarter-Finals match
In the 25-year history of the FIFA Womens’ World Cup, the England national team had never made it past the quarter-finals, but going into their June 27 matchup against Canada – the home team – World Cup home teams had been eliminated three consecutive times. Something had to give.
It proved to be two early goals that gave England a definitive lead that Canada were unable to come back from. And when the extra time was over England had won its first ever Womens’ World Cup Quarter-Finals match. The celebration may prove short-lived, however, because England now has the unenviable task of playing defending the World Cup champions Japan in the Semi-Finals.
4. British Welterweight DOMINANCE as Amir Khan and Kell Brook win back-to-back
Ok, going to cheat a little bit here since those matches both took place in May, but it has been a truly dominant time for British boxers.
From James DeGale’s win over Andre Dirrell to become the first British boxer to win an Olympic Gold medal and a world boxing championship to Amir Khan and Kell Brook’s dominating wins over Chris Algieri and Frankie Gavin respectively, British boxing is on the rise and its Welterweight stars specifically have proven they have what it takes to be the heir apparents to aging boxing megastars such as Manny Pacquiao and the undefeated Floyd “Money” Mayweather.
The two questions that remain is: 1. Will Brook and Khan ever fight? 2. Will either Brook or Khan get a shot at Mayweather or Pacquiao before the two boxing legends hang up the gloves?
