Borussia Dortmund will lose Robert Lewandowski at the end of the season to Bayern Munich on a free transfer, but their decision to retain him for the final year of his contract on a free transfer has not proved a disastrous decision.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have not been able to keep pace with their Bavarian rivals at the top of the Bundesliga table despite Lewandowski’s goals, but have pushed on in Europe and reached the quarter finals of this season’s UEFA Champions League, where they will face Real Madrid.
Lewandowski’s finishing proved instrumental in Borussia Dortmund overcoming the Spanish giants last season, thanks to a four goal haul at Signal Iduna Park, and he remains one of the very best penalty box centre forwards in the game.
