SL Benfica tend to be major players in the latter stages of UEFA competitions.
They reached the final of last season’s UEFA Europa League, losing to Chelsea at the death. The Primeira side were also eliminated by the west Londoners in the quarter finals of the 2011-12 UEFA Champions League, made it to the semi-finals of the 2010-11 Europa League, and quarter finals in 2009-10.
