3. Mateo Kovacic (Inter Milan)
Mateo Kovacic is one of the finest young playmaker talents in the game, with Internazionale skipper Javier Zanetti declaring him the second most talented young player he had seen at San Siro besides Brazil legend Ronaldo.
“With the exception of Ronaldo, who arrived here when he was 21 [Kovacic is 19], yes. Mateo is the most promising,” said Zanetti last summer in an interview with World Soccer.
Kovacic combines the footballing brain of Clarence Seedorf with the dynamism and creativity of Kaka, and although he has much to learn, the Croatian – who looks set to be one of the youngest players selected at this summer’s World Cup – has a highly promising future.
