5. Tottenham Hostpur is better on the pitch than they are on paper
Nobody talks about the Spurs and yet they’ve been among the most consistent teams in the Premier League. It certainly can’t hurt to have a great player like Harry Kane or some conveniently placed matchups against bad teams right after losing to the good ones, but it’s hard to deny that Tottenham isn’t one of the rising stars of the Premier League.
Once again Tottenham Hotspur will find itself in the Europa League, but maybe this time they’ll be able to open the wallet a little bit and actually plunder some of that talent in Europe that all of the other big-time contenders are planning to go out and get.
4. Southampton can’t pick on anybody their own size
Only one Premier League team gave up fewer goals than Southampton: Chelsea.
On paper a team with a goal differential of 21 – good for 4th best in the Premier League – should probably be ranked somewhere between 3rd and 6th at the least. But no, Southampton finds itself with a final record of 18-6-14 – outside of the top six and unable to join the Europa League even though it appears boasts one of the best defenses in the Premier League.
But when you lose to Manchester City, Leicester City, Sunderland, Everton and Stoke City in the last two months while the only wins have come against the relegated Hull City and a crumbling Aston Villa club, it leads to a simple conclusion:
Southampton is just a sandbox bully that picks on the little kids but can’t stand up to anyone with a backbone.
