8. Radamel Falcao and Edinson Cavani to Aston Villa
Aston Villa were on the lookout for a new centre forward in summer 2009, and according to the Birmingham Mail, both Radamel Falcao AND Edinson Cavani issued the proverbial ‘come and get me pleas’ to then boss Martin O’Neill.
The £12.8 million fee quoted by Palermo for Cavani, and the fact that River Plate striker Falcao was unproven in Europe resulted in Aston Villa electing against signing either player.
Instead, they signed Marlon Harewood for just under £5m. And Nigel Reo-Coker for £11m. And Zat Knight for £4m.
Bargains one and all.
