7. Ronaldinho to Manchester United
Manchester United were strongly linked with the signing of Ronaldinho in 2003 after the Brazilian practically went on strike at Paris Saint-Germain in hope of a transfer.
The prospective deal was all part of a major transfer merry-go-round, for FC Barcelona presidential candidate Joan Laporta had previously promised the club’s fans that he would sign David Beckham were he to be elected.
Upon Beckham moving to Real Madrid, Barca swooped for Ronaldinho instead – and promptly won two Liga titles and the 2006 UEFA Champions League amongst a whole host of team and individual honours.
Manchester United had to switch targets to a promising teenager by the name of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Swings and roundabouts.
