7) Joey Barton
If there was ever someone whose actions were totally undeserving of an England cap, it’s QPR’s controversy-ridden midfielder Joey Barton. Received a call-up back in 2007, when to be fair – he was playing pretty well. Regardless of how well he does this season, Barton will never be asked to play for his country again.
8) Matt Jarvis
Jarvis is not a bad player by any stretch of the imagination – he’s just never been an England one. Was called up in 2011 while playing for Wolves, who were relegated from the Premier League that very season.
9) Martin Kelly
Since 2007, Kelly has made 28 league appearances for Liverpool, and seven while on loan at Huddersfield Town. Bizarrely, this was enough to help the stocky fullback receive his one and only England cap in 2012 – where he travelled to the Euros instead of Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand. About as undeserving as it gets!
10) Ryan Shawcross
In the era of John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Jamie Carragher, Ledley King, Gary Cahill, Matthew Upson, Phil Jagielka, Phil Jones and Joleon Lescott (need I go on?), it’s a wonder just how bad an injury crisis England must have been going through for the Stoke City battler to win a cap. A good, solid Premier League defender – Shawcross is simply not a good enough footballer to have won an England cap.
