United spent £28m on the Argentine – seen here falling over while trying to kick a football – in 2001 but it’s hard to blame Fergie in hindsight; Veron’s technical stats on Football Manager were unreal. The playmaker slogged away for two unsuccessful seasons in the Premier League, before United cut their losses and sold him to big-spending Chelsea for £15m.
Fergie refused to admit he’d made a mistake in signing Veron, however, informing a critical media: “[Veron] is a fu***ng great player and you’re all fu***ng idiots.” Niiice.
