3. Gary Ablett (Gold Coast Suns)
His importance can be measured in terms of how the Gold Coast has fared since his season-ending shoulder injury.
With Ablett in the side, the Suns were inside the top six and cruising to their maiden finals appearance.
Now with him gone, Guy McKenna’s side languish in 10th and look nothing like a side that should be playing football in September.
Not only a fine footballer, but an excellent leader.
2. Nick Riewoldt (St. Kilda)
His body is barely holding together, he’s on the wrong side of 30 and the captain of a side on the bottom of the ladder.
But Nick Riewoldt has been nothing short of superb.
As a leader, Riewoldt dragged the Saints over the line in some of their early wins.
St Kilda’s season has been terrible no doubt, but it could have been a lot worse if were not for their captain.
The Saints must be dreading the day this man hangs up the boots.
