2. Mesut Ozil (Arsenal)
Appearances: 21 (1)
Chances created: 73
Mesut Ozil is rather unfortunate to have been labelled a flop by some of the more scathing branches of the British media, for the German’s total of four goals and eight assists this season is far from a poor contribution in his debut campaign in English football.
Ozil’s languid style has seen him branded lazy, but prior to his injury hit match against Bayern Munich, no Arsenal player had run further in the UEFA Champions League, and the German’s desire to play on upon suffering a hamstring strain was illustration of a fierce determination and commitment – even if ultimately foolish.
Ozil has had some quiet games at Arsenal, but still creates more than all but one player in Europe, and when closely marked it creates space for his team-mates to exploit – something often forgotten by said media.
