For the first time in the history of Mississippi football, Ole Miss and Mississippi State hosted and defeated beat two top 10-ranked teams on the same day. When you think of great SEC teams you usually think of Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Florida, Texas A&M or even Georgia, South Carolina or Tennessee occasionally, but rarely do the Mississippi teams even get mentioned as being among the SEC elite – let alone the elite of college football. Saturday was a great day for those two schools and with the losses by 5 top 10 teams, both teams will probably be seeing healthy rises in the top 25 polls this week.
Here are the winners from Week 6 of College Football:
Mississippi State – The second of two big winners for the State of Mississippi, the Bulldogs now get to host arguably the best team in the SEC with Auburn coming in next week. By October 12th Mississippi State will either be a fluke or the top team in the SEC. Either way, it will be the most important game of the week.
Ole Miss – That win over Alabama was big. They’re 5-0 now but now head to College Station to take on a seething Aggies team. This next game will prove if Ole Miss can take down a great QB in his own house.
Baylor – While the team was less than impressive against Texas, the loss by Oklahoma means that Baylor will likely jump into the top 5 this week and will be in the driver’s seat for the Big XII title the rest of the season.
Auburn – With losses by #2 Oregon, #3 Alabama, #4 Oklahoma and #6 Texas A&M, Auburn is virtually a lock to move into the #2 spot after completely dismantling #15 LSU.
TCU – They may not be the strongest contenders for the Big XII title – especially with Baylor looming – but the win over #4 Oklahoma was the team’s biggest win since moving to the Big XII, and they should see a healthy rise in the polls because of it.
