Mesut Ozil and other midfielders pipped to post by brilliant French playmaker…
5) Rafael Van Der Vaart – Hamburg – 18 key passes
Tottenham’s former Dutch playmaker Rafael Van Der Vaart moved back to the Bundesliga last summer to join his old club Hamburg, and is a real hero at the German club. He plays as an attacking midfielder for Hamburg, pulling the strings in the no.10 role. The 30-year-old already made 18 key passes this term.
4) Mesut Ozil – Arsenal – 20 key passes
The brilliant German playmaker made ten key passes during his two matches at Real Madrid, and since his £42m move to Arsenal, has already made ten in his two Premier League matches. He’s been fantastic for the Gunners so far, and has transformed them from top four hopefuls to genuine title contenders.
3) Marco Reus – Borussia Dortmund – 22 key passes
Reus has taken up the creative mantle left by Mario Gotze in the summer, and has massively enjoyed the responsibility. Dortmund sit top of the table, with five wins and one draw, and look like they will made Bayern Munich work very hard for the title this season. Reus interested Chelsea over the summer, but they will have to break the bank if they have any hopes of signing him next summer.
2) Francesco Totti – Roma – 23 key passes
Despite being 37-years-old, the Italian legend was recently offered a new two-year-contract at Roma, and it looks as though he’s earned it. Only one player in European football has made more key passes than Totti this season, and he is still the creative hub of everything good that goes through Roma.
1) Mathieu Valbuena – Marseille – 31 key passes
Like he does for many creative statistics, the diminutive French playmaker Valbuena tops European football’s key passes list. Why does no one ever try and sign this guy?!
