Dempsey’s move to Spurs was particularly hard to stomach for Liverpool fans because Icelandic attacker Gylfi Sigurdsson had already joined the North London outfit from under Rodgers’ not inconsiderable nose earlier that summer. After impressing under Rodgers in a loan spell at Swansea, Sigurdsson looked certain to join the Northern Irishman in his new post at Anfield.
But Spurs reportedly offered the Icelandic international more cash at the eleventh hour, and he moved to White Hart Lane in a reported £8m deal from Bundesliga club Hoffenheim. The 24-year-old has struggled to hold down a regular first team spot at Spurs, however, and remains on the fringes of the first team.
