5) Lucas – Liverpool – 15 interceptions
Lucas sits deep in the Reds’ midfield alongside skipper Steven Gerrard, and they provide the platform for the more creative players like Coutinho to perform. The Brazilian was poor against Southampton at the weekend, but has still intercepted 15 passes already this season.
4) Mathieu Debuchy – Newcastle – 16 interceptions
Newcastle’s French defender has established himself as a first-team regular under Alan Pardew, whose team have quietly enjoyed a very solid start to the season despite the supposed summer transfer crisis. The 28-year-old right-back’s 16 interceptions have helped Newcastle pick up eight points so far this season.
3) Ahmed Elmohamady – Hull City – 17 interceptions
Hull’s tricky Egyptian winger has started the season very well, and is the only attacking player to make the top five. His hustling style and quick feet will create chances for the newly promoted side this season, and his ability to read the game has helped him intercept 17 opposition passes.
2) Ashley Williams – Swansea – 18 interceptions
The tough tackling Swansea skipper is every Liverpool fan’s worst enemy at the moment after his late challenge on Coutinho last week saw the Brazilian suffer a nasty injury. Swansea fans love his no-nonsense approach though, and only one player in the country has intercepted more balls so far this season.
1) Michael Carrick – Manchester United – 26 interceptions
Head and shoulders above any other Premier League players in terms of interception, is United’s midfield metronome Michael Carrick. Not only does the Englishman dictate play from deep with his passing, he’s also intercepted a whopping 26 opposition passes already this term.
