4. Expansion would require redistribution of conferences again
When the NFL added the Houston Texans in 2002, the league switched from a 6 division system to an 8 division system. Adding one or two more teams to the league as an expansion proposition would most likely require the team to go back to a 6 division format to reduce the lack of fairness within each division – something that might lead to many strong objections from NFL fans who are a fan of the 4-team per division format.
Changing the divisional format would also impact the playoff format: since there would be one fewer division title, there would have to be a change to the Wild Card round, the Bye-Week and others.
In short, there are too many variables that the NFL would have to experiment with and hope it all works out well enough for the fans to enjoy if the league were to add a new team to the fold.
