Watson has already captained Australia, albeit in bizarre circumstances.
He was given a one-match suspension after the homework-gate scandal, only to be brought back into the squad and captain the side in the absence of Clarke.
Australia lost the game, and it remains to be seen if Cricket Australia are willing to take the gamble again.
Age works against him however, with CA likely to appoint a younger player such as Smith.
