Mourinho has always hinted, however, that a move into international football would come in the future and it seems unlikely that the 50-year-old is ready to give up the day-to-day challenges of club football just yet.
But Portugal have not won a competitive game since 11 September and currently sit third in World Cup Qualifying, after a disappointing 3-3 draw in Israel. With the team floundering, head coach Paulo Bento faces an uncertain future and the 42-year-old could be given the boot regardless of results if Mou expresses enough interest in the role.
And if Mourinho leaves the Portugal job too much longer, he will miss the chance to work with Cristiano Ronaldo, a player who capable of helping the European giants to World Cup success.
