Reds need back-up for first-choice Pepe Reina.
Liverpool face a fight to land highly-rated young Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy this summer after it emerged that Newcastle United are also keen to sign the player at the end of the season, says the Daily Mail.
Reports of the Reds’ interest in the player surfaced earlier this month after the England Under-21 international produced a sensational man-of-the-match display to prevent the Merseyside giants from scoring in a 0-0 draw in the Premier League at the Madejski.
In fact, the 23-year-old’s eye-catching showing between the sticks for the struggling top-flight outfit was so good that opposition head coach Brendan Rodgers described McCarthy’s goalkeeping performance as the best he had ever seen in his managerial career in his post-match press conference.
However, it now appears as though Rodgers faces a stiff battle to bring the shot stopper to Anfield when the transfer window reopens on June 1 from the Magpies, who themselves could soon be on the look-out for a new No 1 with doubts currently surrounding the long-term future of Netherlands international Tim Krul, who may join Serie A giants AC Milan next season.
