James McCarthy (Everton)
When Everton appointed Roberto Martinez to be David Moyes’ replacement as manager, many predicted the Toffees would become exciting and fluid in attack, and porous in defence.
They have been excellent going forward, but that they haven’t been slack at the back is largely down to their two brilliant anchor midfielders – Gareth Barry, on loan from Manchester City, and James McCarthy brought in from the Latics and playing a withdrawn role.
McCarthy keeps possession well, making just under 50 passes per Premier League game, and has three assists to his name so far.
He is also a dogged tackler, making 2.9 successful challenges per match in the top flight, and 1.7 interceptions.
Everton could yet reach the UEFA Champions League this season, and it will be down to intelligent young players such as McCarthy – and his manager Roberto Martinez.
