9. Sunderland
Transfer spend: £156m
Transfer fees received: £109m
Net: £46.9m
The Black Cats have consistent spent pretty big money annually for the past five years, with this summer seeing likes of Jozy Altidore (£8.5m) and Emmanuel Giaccherini (£6.5m) arrive at the Stadium of Light. The annual turnover of players on Wearside is always pretty high but Sunderland seem to have a bad habit of buying players for more than their worth, with Steven Fletcher (£12m), Adam Johnson (£10m), Conor Wickham (£8m) and Asamoah Gyan (£13.2m) all good examples. They did, at least, make a profit on £16.5m signing Darren Bent, who joined Aston Villa for £18m.
